The "Hula Hoop" throughout the centuries.

As far back as 3000 BCE Egyptians were curving reeds and rattan into circles. These hooped circles were swung around the waist, pushed along the ground by a stick or thrown in the air. In  Later, both Greek and Roman children played with hoops made from grapevine and strips of scrap metal. It is worth mentioning that this sport was considered quite beneficial, which is why it was recommended by Hippocrates for the training of the body of those who could not respond to intense exercise.

Eromenos: he holds a hoop and a stick in his left hand

In the North American continent, Eskimo children used hoops to learn harpooning skills. This fun form of target practice helped teach accuracy for many First Nation and Native American people as well. For the Lakota, however, the hoop has extra significance in that it symbolizes the Circle of LifeAlthough many tribes lay claim to the Native American Hoop Dance, it wasn't until the 1930s that a young man named Tony White Cloud (Jemez Pueblo, NM), began using multiple hoops made out of willow wood and became known as "founder of the hoop dance".

Native American Hoop dance usually focuses on very rapid moves, but sometimes speed and creativeness balance the scoring between Hoop dancers who use only four hoops but dance to extremely fast songs, versus dancers with 20 or more hoops who danced to a slower drumbeat.

Native American CHulaHoop Ambassador, Brian Hammil, Five times World Champion Hoop Dancer demonstrating the story of creation. The dancer uses the hoops as storytelling props, spinning or holding them to transform himself into animals and other elements from the story.

Homemade hoops started showing up in English households by the 14th century, and were used by all ages. “Hooping” became a craze that swept the country until british doctors starting blaming the use of hoops for everything from back pain to heart attacks. But it wasn't until 18th century were british sailors visited the Hawaiian Islands was that toy got the name we are all familiar with. They compare the traditional Hula dance and recognized the similar hip movements, since then the name "hula hoop" was born.

In the early 20th century, a modern version of the hoop was made of bamboo. Australian school children used hula hoops as exercise equipment. Soon the demand became so high it drew the attention of two American toy manufacturers, Richard P. Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin, the founders of Wham-O. They began producing plastic hoops in bright colors, for $1.98 each, and a craze was born. In 1958, in the space of four months twenty-five million Wham-O Hula Hoops were sold that were not geometrically correct for success and work for less than one third of the population.

Knerr and Melin trademarked the name Hula Hoop®, but they could not trademark the hoop itself because it is such an ancient invention.

Hula Hoop Geometry

Toroidal Equilibrium is the geometric concept which illustrates how the axis corresponds to the toroid. The axis represents your body and the toroid represents the hoop.
Wham-O sold over 100 million hoops that were not geometrically correct for success and worked for less than one third of the population smaller, cheap knock offs flood gymnasiums world wide, destroying the geometric opportunity for success and damaging self esteem around the world.

1- The Dominant Side: Most right hand dominant people hoop to the left and vice versa
Which hand do you write with is the most effective question.

2- Three Steps: Throw the hoop. Raise your arms. Rock back and forth.

  • Throw the hoop: With feet together, take one step forward with your “foot of Flow” left, for righties and right for lefties.

Place the hoop against your back at your waist with your hands at 5 and 7, like the clock.

Hold the hoop parallel to the ground.

       Throw the hoop.
With follow through, just like tennis or golf, pushing your
       hand towards your belly button.

  • Raise your arms: Raise your arms placing your hands above your head.

Do not allow hands to hang in front of the body like aex, this disturbs your posture.

       Chin up. Look up.

  • Rock back and forth: With your feet in the original position and your hips

Squared off at the waist, rock back and forth. Pushing the hoop with your abdominals.

3- Don't Look Down - The head is the heaviest part of the body. When you look down it. It disturbs your balance and causes the hoop to fall. Posture is key to hooping success!

   Hoops On!
Which hand do you write with ? Feet together. One step forward. Keep your feet parallel.Put your hoop against your back at the waist. Hands at 5 and 7 like the clock. Throw hard with follow through. Raise your arms, Hands up. Chin up. Look Up. Rock back and forth.

85% experience success on the first throw.
What If they do not succeed immediately ? Try throwing/flowing to the other side.
Alternative sides of flow, activating both sides of the brain, until you can determine the dominant
side. If there is still no success, try with the eyes closed on the strongest side. This promotes use of body consciousness.
Sometimes a physical adjustment in the hip area is needed by “practice rocking” guided by you
holding the hoop and moving the student back and forth using the hoop.
